Colombian Troops Kill Guerrilla Chieftain in Fight

The Colombian army killed in a battle on Saturday a guerrilla chieftain known as Commander Orlando of Front 53 of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

The Colombian army killed in a battle on Saturday a guerrilla chieftain known as Commander Orlando of Front 53 of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

General Fernando Castellanos, commander of Colombia's Fifth Army Division, told the press that the chieftain was carrying a Galil assault-rifle when he was killed. He described Orlando as the leader of a kidnapping and extortion group operating in the area of Guavio.

Castellanos added that in another fight near Junin, a FARC member, identified as El Gato and accused of murdering two people,was captured.

With 17,000 members, the FARC is the largest guerrilla group inthe country.
