One US soldier was killed and four others were wounded late Friday in an attack on their convoy in Baghdad, a US military spokesman said on Saturday.

"One soldier was killed and four others were wounded shortly before 11:00 p.m. (1900 GMT) last night," the spokesman said.

An interpreter working with the US army was also wounded in the attack on a regiment of the First Armoured Division in Baghdad's northern slum district of Sadr City, formerly known as Saddam City.

A total of 61 US soldiers have died in ambushes or accidents in Iraq since US President George W. Bush declared the major fighting in the country over on May 1, according to US military tally.
