Liberia's main rebel group Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD) on Friday declared an immediate ceasefire, according to a report from the capital Monrovia.

Liberian Defense Minister Daniel Chea said he welcomed the LURD's decision to avoid a "grotesque catastrophe" in the war-ravaged capital.

Chea said the government troops would also hold fire.

The renewed fighting that erupted early this week had left some300 people dead and over 1,000 injured.
