The tourism authority in Beijing Thursday introduced a package of preferential policies for foreign visitors in an attempt to expedite the recovery of the travel industry.

on Tuesday removed Beijing from its list of SARS-infected areas and lifted its travel advisory on the city, marking a turning point for Beijing's travel industry, said Yu Changjiang, a director with the Beijing Tourism Bureau, addressing a press conference Thursday.

Travel companies will provide a series of preferential services to visitors from abroad, including free health brochures, souvenirs, price discounts and even banquets at the Great Hall of the People, said the official.

Tourism revenue for 2003 is expected to drop by 50 percent as a result of the SARS outbreak, he added. Last year, Beijing recorded 3.1 million overseas tourist arrivals, generating 3.1 billion US dollars in revenue, and the tourism sector reported 2002 revenue of 118.8 billion yuan (14 billion US. dollars).
