Liberia's main rebel group, the Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD), and government forces loyal to President Charles Taylor fought Thursday for control of the war-wracked seaside capital Monrovia, according to reports reaching here on Thursday.
Liberian Minister of Health Peter Coleman was quoted as saying that the past two days of fighting in Monrovia had killed between 200-300 civilians, and injured 1,000.
However, there was no word on government or rebel casualties.
Ghanaian President John Kufuor on Thursday condemned the fighting, and urged both sides to return to talks.
The Liberian government and rebels had reached their first-ever ceasefire in Ghana on June 17, under urging of west African leaders, the United Nations, the United States and the European Union.
Liberia has been wracked by almost uninterrupted war since the 1990s, fueling chaos in west Africa with tens of thousands of refugees flocking to nearby countries for shelter.
