US-EU Summit Opens in Washington

Leaders of the United States and the European Union opened their annual summit Wednesday morning in Washington at the White House for talks on trade, terrorism and a range of regional and international issues.

Leaders of the United States and the European Union opened their annual summit Wednesday morning in Washington at the White House for talks on trade, terrorism and a range of regional and international issues.

US President George W. Bush and EU leaders met with Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, European Commission President Romano Prodi and EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana in the Oval Office and then for a working lunch.

The two sides are expected to sign agreements on fighting terrorism and organized crime, which may include new legal and extradition accords.

In addition to Bush, US delegates include Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell, National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice and several other cabinet members.
