The 700-thousand-kilowatt generator went into operation yesterday (on Tuesday) and the electricity produced will help power the Central China network.
When in full operation, the Three Gorges hydropower plant with its 26 generators will be the largest of its kind in the world, generating an annual output of 847 trillion kilowatts of electricity.
Four of the 26 generators will be in operation by the end of this year.
