The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) government would, in principle, back abid to host the 2009 East Asian Games.
The government agreed in principle to render support to the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, (SF&OC) to host the fifth East Asian Games in 2009, Hong Kong's Secretary for Home Affairs Patrick Ho said here on Tuesday.
"The East Asian Games is a major event in East Asia and second only to the Asian Games in the Asian region. By hosting the event,we can show the world that Hong Kong is in name and reality an event capital," Ho said.
The SF&OC has recently proposed to the Hong Kong SAR governmentfor support in bidding the hosting right of the Games.
Ho said a preliminary feasibility assessment has found that Hong Kong is capable of hosting the Games with about 20 competition events and the participation of 2,000 athletes from 11countries or regions by using or upgrading the existing venues andby supplementing these venues with additional temporary works.
The estimated budget for hosting the Games is about 171 millionHong Kong dollars (one US dollar equals to 7.8 Hong Kong dollars) and the income is 87 million Hong Kong dollars with an anticipateddeficit of 84 million Hong Kong dollars.
The government will start working with the SF&OC soon on plans to tender Hong Kong's bid to the East Asian Games Association for the hosting right of the fifth East Asian Games.
