Acting Mayor of Beijing Wang Qishan welcomed the double decisions of World Health Organization (WHO) to remove the capital from the SARS-infected area list and to lift its travel advisory against the city on Tuesday.
Marking the victory over severe acute respiratory syndrome, Wang said he mourned those who died of the disease, extended his condolences to their families, congratulated recovered patients, and presented his admiration and gratitude to all the people who had devoted themselves to the fight against SARS, especially the front-line medical and nursing staff.
Wang also appreciated the assistance of WHO experts in Beijing's fight against the disease.
However, he warned that due to a possible resurgence of SARS asobserved in other infected areas, the public should stay fully vigilant.
He said the government would reflect on the experience accumulated from the fight against SARS to better coordinate economic and social development with city management and construction.
Rapid response public health systems would soon be established across the city to prevent the spread of SARS and any other contagious disease, said Wang.
Beijing is one hard-hit areas in the world. By 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Beijing had recorded a total of 2,521 SARS cases, 191 deaths and 2,280 recovered patients discharged from hospital.
