China suffered 24 extraordinarily serious road accidents, each killing more than 10 people, by June 22 this year, the Ministry of Public Security has disclosed.

The 24 accidents claimed a total of 355 lives, 85 more than the same period last year, and injured 318 others, it was announced ata televised conference organized by the Administration of Communications under the Ministry of Public Security.

Each of accidents killed six more people than the figure for serious road traffic accidents for the same period last year.

A total of 270,000 traffic accidents occurred across China in the first five months of this year, killing more than 40,000 people and injuring 190,000 others. Though the number of accidents, deaths and injuries were down from a year ago, the number of fatal accidents registered a sharp rise.

Yang Jun, deputy director of the Administration of Communications attributed the increase of accidents to overtaking, overloading and violation of the traffic regulations.

He called on traffic police to investigate traffic flows, traffic violations and accidents on national and provincial roads and expressways and make rational police deployments.

A survey on the expressway between Beijing and Zhuhai which opened to traffic not long ago, showed 90 percent of trucks running on the road were overtaking. Of the 50 traffic accidents on the road, the braking systems of all the motor vehicles involved failed to meet state standards.
