According to the news from Chinanews.com of Jun 22 China is going to gather in 95.0 billion kilos of summer grain as reckoned by the Ministry of Agriculture, indicating an annual reduction of 3.5 million kilograms.

The Agriculture and Rural Area Work Committee of the NPC called a plenary session on Jun 22 to hear the report from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Water Conservancy, the State Administration of Forestry and the State Meteorological Administration on the relevant situations. As learned, The reduction of summer grain output is mainly due to the reduction of 26 million mu of cultivating land for grain. But in the meanwhile, the per-mu output saw an increase of 5.6 kilos as against the previous year. Moreover we saw a quick development in the use of special fine quality seeds, and the areas good for growing fine-quality agricultural produces were getting relatively concentrated, indicating a better tendency in production.

As introduced by the Ministry of Agriculture, up to now, epidemic SARS has been effectively controlled in the countryside. However, the greatest problem the agriculture and rural economy is now confronted is the big influence entailed by the SARS which manifests in the following five aspects:

The increase of grain output by farmers are getting more difficult with the agro-produce price to go down, especially that of fresh and living products. The consumption of animal and aquatic products are on the decrease. The growing-speed of the township enterprises is getting slower, especially, for the farmers to go out for work in other areas being seriously hindered.

It sees a heavier task to readjust the agricultural structure, indicating a shrinking phenomenon, especially in the production of flesh chicken and the relevant industries. Of the township enterprises most of the tertiary trades are on a standstill or in a state of semi-production with the secondary industry suffering a great impact.

Due to the prevention from the spread of atypical pneumonia it causes a great reduction of people and vehicles to move round. This has caused the piling and stack up of fresh and living agro-products, and with traffic stopped they were unable to be sold to other areas.

Likewise the export of agro-products was kept back. What suffered most is the vegetables, fruit, animal-and-aquatic products of higher added values while some countries put up further technical barriers against the export of Chinas agro-products on the pretext for the prevention of the SARS spread.

Besides, the quality safety of the agro-products requires the immediate attention.

As introduced forceful measures are being taken by the Ministry of Agriculture to give strong enough support to animal-husbandry, aquatic industry, township-run enterprises, transportation and sales business for agro-products and the job-shifting and employment of labor-force in the countryside. By doing so it is to help rejuvenate these industries suffered due to the spread of the SARS disease.
