Russian and US positions on the Middle East settlement mainly coincide, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday at his annual press conference.
Putin admitted that there are certain shades of positions of Russia, the United States and the European Union, but stressing that "on the main lines of the settlement, our position fits with that of the United States."
He noted that Russia, the United States, the United Nations and the European Union had worked out the roadmap peace plan and want both Israelis and Palestinians to follow it.
He highlighted the role of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, saying "in particular, we still think the role and significance of Chairman Arafat in the settlement process cannot be neglected. He is an important man. I think that neglecting this factor would be erroneous."
The Russian president said he does not think the activities of his US counterpart in the Middle East include any non-constructive policy elements.
The Russian and US foreign policy chiefs have been continuously adjusting their positions, Putin added.
