Iran is ready to accept full-scale control of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over its nuclear programs, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday at his annual press conference.
Iran is ready to accept full-scale control of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over its nuclear programs, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday at his annual press conference.
"According to our knowledge, the Iranian leadership is ready for full accession to all protocols and requirements of the IAEA on control over its nuclear programs," Putin said.
The president said he received the corresponding assurances from Iranian President Mohammad Khatami in a telephone conversation two days ago, who pledged that his country was prepared to sign any protocols required by the IAEA.
The United States has been pressing Russia to halt cooperation with Iran in building a nuclear power in Bushehr, accusing Iran of tailoring its nuclear energy program in a bid to make weapons secretly.
Iran has firmly rejected the allegations, saying it does not wnat to do anything but to generate electricity at is nuclear facilities.
Russia has claimed that the construction of the nuclear plant, while under the control of the IAEA, had not violated "any international agreements" and it would continue its nuclear program with Iran.
However, Russia has urged Iran to sign a protocol placing all nuclear facilities under control of the IAEA.
