215 Rebels Killed in Aceh

During the first month of the military offensive against separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) in the troubled Aceh province, government troops have killed 215 rebels, said the spokesman of the military force, Maj. General Syafrie Syamsuddin, here on Thursday.

During the first month of the military offensive against separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) in the troubled Aceh province, government troops have killed 215 rebels, said the spokesman of the military force, Maj. General Syafrie Syamsuddin, here on Thursday.

After a press briefing at the military headquarters, the spokesman also revealed that 199 members of the GAM had been arrested by the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI).

Syafrie said that the TNI had also captured 85 long and short guns from the GAM rebels.

However, he admitted that 26 members of the TNI had been killed,23 people seriously injured, 67 others wounded, during the operations.

The spokesman said that the TNI had deployed one detachment of the Hawks warplanes for demonstrations in the battle area, as wellas US-made F16 warplanes, the Puma helicopters and the Bell helicopters and warships.

But, Syafrie refused to elaborate on the number of civilians killed during the operations.

On the same occasion, Lt. General Djamari Chaniago, a high ranking officer of the army, said that the military forces were proposing 1.6 trillion rupiah (some 178 million US dollars) fund to the government for the operations, currently some 300 billion rupiah (about 33 million US dollars) had been used.

The GAM has been fighting for an independent state since 1976, and more than 10,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed during the prolonged conflicts between the GAM and the government troops.
