China wants the Korean peninsula to be free of nuclear weapons and enjoy peace, stability and prosperity, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing said Thursday in Phnom Penh.

Li made the remarks when answering questions in a joint press conference of the ASEAN Post Ministerial Conferences.

He said China has worked very hard with the international community to help realizing the enduring peace of the Korean peninsula.

"We think the best way to this goal is dialogue," said Li, adding that the recent Beijing talks among China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), and the United States to deal with the DPRK nuclear issue was a good start, hoping this kind of talks would continue.

"I believe that if all the parties concerned have the sincerity, determination and confidence to keep the dialogue going forward, we can finally have a peaceful solution," he said.

The Chinese foreign minister also said that the developing ASEAN has been playing a more and more important role in maintaining the regional security and development, and China is determined to work for a long-term cooperation with the ASEAN.

Li Zhaoxing is attending the 10th ASEAN Regional Forum and the Post Ministerial Conferences in Phnom Penh. He will leave here tomorrow for a visit to Thailand.

China hopes DPRK nuclear issue talks to continue flexibly, pragmatically
China hopes the countries concerned to continue the process of the Beijing talks on the nuclear issue of the DPRK with a flexible and pragmatic attitude, said a Foreign Ministry spokesman Thursday in Beijing.

When asked by reporters to comment on the DPRK unclear issue at the regular press conference, Liu Jianchao said China does not hope that the process of the Beijing talks would be hindered because of difference in form, and also does not hope that the goal of making the Korean Peninsula nuclear-free and maintaining peace and stability in the peninsula would be affected by difference in form.

Liu noted that the foreign ministers of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK) stated their stances on the DPRK nuclear issue during their meetings on Tuesday.

Japan and the ROK appreciated Beijing's hosting of the talks on the issue, and both nations held that the process of the talks would continue, he added.

At present, he went on, the international community has a common objective of realizing the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and maintaining the peninsula's peace and stability.

The Beijing talks is a good start for the peaceful settlement of the DPRK nuclear issue through dialogue, Liu acknowledged.

Meanwhile, the spokesman said the international community generally hopes this process would go on and that the Chinese side has all along be in contact with the relevant countries.
