China marksmen are confident of earning 25 or 26 berths for 2004 Athens Olympic Games, head coach Xu Haifeng said Thursday.

"We've already got a total of 16 berths for the Athens Olympics' shooting competition," said Xu, who won China's first Olympic gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984.

Earlier this month, Li Jie earned an Olympic berth in the men's10m running target at the ISSF World Cup in Croatia.

However, China's berths mainly come from pistol and rifle events. Xu said the Chinese team would focus more on clay pigeon events in future's competition.

"We've got enough berths in pistol and rifle events, we hope toearn some in clay pigeon events," said Xu.

China will send a second-string squad to next month's World Cupin South Korea and the Asian Shooting Championships next February, said Xu.

"Hopefully, we can get at least eight more berths at these competitions," he added.
