Thai-Chinese Agricultural Cooperation Advancing Despite SARS Outbreak

Thai Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Sora-at Klinpratum vowed here Wednesday that his country's strong ties with China in agriculture would advance despite the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

Thai Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Sora-at Klinpratum vowed here Wednesday that his country's strong ties with China in agriculture would advance despite the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

Klinpratum, during a meeting Wednesday morning with his Chinesecounterpart Du Qinglin, said the Thai prime minister's visit to China had conveyed the message to the world, as well as to the Thai people, that China was quite safe, and bilateral cooperative projects delayed by SARS would be resumed soon.

Klinpratum expressed the hope that Thailand could increase exchanges and cooperation with China in various agricultural spheres like agro-biological technology, and quality control of farm products.

Du said China and Thailand shared a tradition of friendship andthat the two countries had forged cooperation in various agricultural fields.

China had adopted an active but very cautious attitude to the research and development of agricultural biological technology, headded.

China attached great importance to guaranteeing the safety of farm products, said Du, adding that the country had launched a national drive to protect the quality of agricultural products.

"SARS has made the Chinese people more conscious of their health and food quality," Du told Klinpratum, adding that China would strive to substantially improve the overall quality of farm produce within the next five years.

China and Thailand were both agricultural countries, sharing similar experiences and facing the same challenges, Du said. Chinawas ready to learn from and boost agricultural cooperation with Thailand.

An agreement on animal quarantine cooperation would be signed between China and Thailand in near future, Du disclosed.
