United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan will embark on a three-week trip to the Middle East, Europe and Africa Thursday, UN spokesman Fred Eckhard said Wednesday.
Annan is scheduled to leave on Tuesday evening for the Jordanian capital of Amman, where he will join US Secretary of State Colin Powell and senior officials from the European Union and Russia in seeking ways to save the Middle East peace Roadmap, Eckhard told reporters.
The implementation of the newly-released peace proposal has been overshadowed by a new vicious cycle of violence between Israelis and Palestinians in recent weeks.
In parallel to the Quartet meeting, the World Economic Forum will be taking place in Amman from Saturday through Monday, and Annan is expected to address the forum.
The UN chief will leave Tuesday for London, where he will have official meetings with British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Annan will then fly to Geneva to attend a high-level meeting ofthe Economic and Social Council. After his stay in Geneva, Annan will travel on to Mozambique's capital, Maputo, to participate in the African Union Summit.
