US Secretary of State Colin Powell and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice are expected to visit Israel and the Palestinian territories in the coming days in efforts to salvage the dying roadmap peace initiative, Israel Radio reported Tuesday.

Powell will arrive in Israel on Friday to meet with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, and he would also meet Palestinian leaders in the West Bank city of Ramallah, the radio said.

On Sunday, Powell will hold a meeting on the roadmap in Jordan'sAqaba with representatives from the Quartet Committee comprising the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia.

The roadmap that envisions an independent Palestinian state by 2005, was drafted by the Quartet late last year and presented to the Israelis and Palestinians at the end of last April.

US National Security Adviser Rice is scheduled to visit the region on June 29, according to the radio.

The United States has obviously stepped up mediation efforts with the aim of ending the latest violent cycle between the Palestinians and Israel and starting the implementation of the roadmap peace plan.

Meanwhile, visiting US Assistant Secretary of State John Wolf has held separately meetings with top Israeli and Palestinian leaders to promote the roadmap jeopardized by the latest violence, which has claimed the lives of over 50 people.
