Palestinian National Authority (PNA) Cabinet Minister Yasser Abed Rabbo said on Tuesday that the meeting between the PNA and US envoy John Wolf should focus on the implementation of the roadmap and the dismantling of Jewish settlements.

Quoted by the Ramallah-based Al-Ayyam daily on Tuesday, Abed Rabbo said the implementation of the roadmap should be monitored by hundreds of observers so as to follow up and monitor the dismantling of the Jewish settlements established on the Palestinians territories.

US envoy John Wolf arrived in the Gaza Strip earlier on Tuesday to meet with PNA Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) and his Foreign Minister Nabil Shaath, as well as Minister for Security Affairs Mohammed Dahlan.

Abed Rabbo added that the monitoring of the roadmap's implementation would be one of the top priorities during the talks between PNA officials and Wolf, saying "it should be a wide spread monitoring plan that works according to obligatory mechanisms and timetables."

Meanwhile, Abed Rabbo described the statements of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in the Israeli Knesset (parliament) as "politically naive."

Sharon had stated on Tuesday in the Israeli Knesset, which was holding its first plenum debate on the roadmap, that he does not consider the internationally-backed roadmap as an agreement, but rather as "a security understanding."

The roadmap, worked out by the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia, envisions an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel by 2005.
