The 36th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM) called on Myanmar to set free Aung San Suu Kyi at the earliest date in a joint communique issued at the end of the meeting Tuesday.
The joint communique said ASEAN members noted the efforts of the government of Myanmar to promote peace and development, and the ASEAN sticks to the principle of non-interference.
It said ASEAN Foreign Ministers welcomed the assurances given by Myanmar that measures taken following the "May 30 incident" were temporary, and "looked forward to the early lifting of restrictions placed on Aung San Suu Kyi."
Meanwhile, at a press conference, AMM Chairman Hor Namhong said ASEAN foreign ministers had held open talks with their Myanmar counterpart Win Aung. They hoped he could convey their words to Myanmar leaders.
When asked about the timetable of release, Hor Namhong replied,"it is the matter Myanmar government can decide," and ASEAN hopes Aung San Suu Kyi can be set free as soon as "the situation in Myanmar is back to normal."
Aung San Suu Ski, a well-known opposition leader in Myanmar, was "put in custody" on May 30 by the government.
On Sunday, Win Aung said his government was keeping her in custody to protect her from "possible assassination attempts," andwas working on her release.
The 36th Ministerial Meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) started on Monday and ended on Tuesday.
