ASEAN has taken major steps forward in fostering security and stability in the region in the past year, Hor Namhong, foreign minister of Cambodia, said Friday.
Speaking to the 4th meeting of the 36th ASEAN Standing Committee, Hor Namhong, in his capacity as committee chairman, stressed that ASEAN's strong commitment and active cooperation against international terrorism contribute greatly to regional security and stability.
By adopting the ASEAN Plan of Action to Combat Transnational Crime, he added, the bloc has "laid basis for setting up the mechanism" to fight terrorism and other crimes cooperatively.
To accelerate the process, he said, the ASEAN leaders twice issued declarations expressing their clear resolve to deal with terrorism not only by their own countries, but also through cooperation with the international community.
In this respect, he said, only seven months ago, ASEAN and China signed the Joint Declaration on Cooperation in the Field of Non-Traditional Security Issues. In addition, the two sides also inked documents concerning "conduct of parties in the South China Sea" to enhance regional security, especially maritime security, for the common good.
On behalf of the standing committee, he said, ASEAN appreciates China's position on security, particularly its position on the issue of Southeast Asia being nuclear weapons free.
All these "provide frameworks for the promotion of mutual confidence," he stressed, and thus contribute substantially to regional peace.
The standing committee is meeting here to make arrangements for the 36th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM) to be held on June 16-17.
