The Beijing Huaneng Thermo-electricity Plant will start the second phase expansion project to meet the heating requirements of 14 million square meters of construction area in the winter.

The letter of intent signing ceremony was held Saturday on the construction of the second-phase project of Huaneng.

Since the Huaneng first phase project was launched in 1999, thermo-electricity has provided 15 percent of the electricity, 30 percent of the heat and 50 percent of the gas needs of Beijing.

With the fast economic development and improvement in standards of living, and with the 2008 Olympics approaching, Beijing urgently needs heat and power. The second phase project will provide 1.05-million-kw of power to Beijing.

The expansion project, with a generating capacity of 1.05-million-kw, will be launched in 2005 and go into operation in 2007.

A new Huaneng Beijing Thermo-electricity Co.Ltd will be established to regulate the investment and management of the plant, which will be restructured.
