Permanent Ship Lock at Three Gorges Put to Test
The permanent ship locks at the Three Gorges Project was tested Friday as it allowed the passage of a passenger ship.

The speed of water flow was recorded at 10,000 cubic meters per second, said sources with the China Yangtze River Three Gorges Project Development Corporation.

After 10 years of construction, the Three Gorges Project saw the official storage of water on June 1. And by June 10, the water level before the dam rose to 135 meters. Shipping along the Yangtze through the Three Gorges is scheduled to resume on June 16.

At least one more test will be carried out in July or August when the river is swollen with flood water, bringing water flow to40,000 cubic meters per second, said the sources.

Navigation is Possible
Full resumption of normal navigation on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River is now possible with the water level of the Three Gorges Reservoir having reached 135 meters.

During the water storage, the water flow from the Three Gorges Reservoir was only 3,500 cubic meters per second, only one fifth of the normal amount. As a result, ships were unable to navigate the middle reaches of the river.

But now the water flow from the Three Gorges Reservoir has reached 20,500 cubic meters per second, raising water levels at all hydrological stations downstream on the middle reaches by a big margin.

The depth of water ranges from four meters to 6 and a half meters in many parts of the middle reaches, allowing ships to travel the section as normal.
