The Yellow River, China's second longest river, is likely to be hit by severe floods in the coming flood season, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said Friday.

Meteorologists are predicting heavy rainfalls in both south and north China this flood season. Rainfall in north China will be much more than the average level of the previous four years.

Zhang Zhitong, a senior official with the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, said the flood season of the Yellow River normally started on July 1 and ended in late October.Given that the river had escaped serious flooding for more than 20years, the possibility increased this year.

He claimed the central government had earmarked huge funds in recent years to build embankments along the river in a bid to improve its flood control ability.

Flowing through nine provinces and autonomous regions of north China, the Yellow River was vital to the country's sustainable economic and social development.
