The Chinese ministries of Commerce and Finance issued a joint circular Friday to offer more support to domestic small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for their exploration of international markets.

When the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) began affecting enterprises' international services, the two ministries ordered local branches to allocate special emergency funds and to encourage SMEs to focus on e-commerce, according to the document.

The special funds were established in 2001 to support Chinese SMEs for their exploration of international markets. The document said this year enterprises may receive more supporting funds.
