ASEAN, China to Intensify Cooperation against Transnational Crime

The Association of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China identified priorities of cooperation against transnational crime, namely terrorism, sea piracy, human and drug trafficking, and international economic crimes, said a Vietnamese official.

At a press conference on Friday, Truong Huu Quoc, chairman of the 3rd annual ASEAN Senior Official Meeting on Transnational Crimes (SOMTC), said that in the ASEAN+China Senior Official Meeting on Transnational Crime, the two sides agreed to enhance the exchange of technical and intelligence information. They also agreed to exchange experience in combating international crime, topromote personnel exchange and training for law enforcement officers and experts, to strengthen the law enforcement cooperation, and to encourage joint research activities.

Quoc also noted that the 3rd annual SOMTC reviewed the implementation of the Work Program to Implement the ASEAN Plan of Action to Combat Transnational Crime. The ASEAN countries reaffirmed that they would extend further efforts in the fight against transnational crimes.

The five Meetings of Senior Officials on transnational crimes, namely the 3rd annual SOMTC; the 1st ASEAN+3 (with Japan, China, and South Korea); ASEAN+China, ASEAN+European Union (EU), ASEAN+USSenior Official Meetings on Transnational Crime reviewed and worked out concrete measures to strengthen the cooperation among ASEAN and between ASEAN and its dialogue partners. The cooperationcovers combating transnational crimes, such as terrorism, people smuggling, narcotics-related, money laundering, sea piracy, and high-tech crimes, he added.

The five international meetings, which lasted from June 9-13, 2003, were attended by 150 international delegates from ASEAN member countries, Japan, China, South Korea, Europe and the UnitedStates.

ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
