China on Thursday said that Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's upcoming visit will further boost the two nations' ties.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Kong Quan announced at a press conference that Prime Minister Vajpayee will pay an official visit to China from June 22 to 27 at the invitation of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao.

He said both China and India attach great significance to the visit and are making active preparations. During the visit, Wen will hold talks with Vajpayee, and other Chinese leaders will also meet him. "I believe the two sides will exchange views on regional and international issues and reiterate their respective stances on safeguarding regional peace, stability and development."

Kong said China feels encouraged by the rapid development of Sino-Indian ties in recent years. Not long ago, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Vajpayee when attending the celebrations of the 300-year anniversary of the founding of St. Petersburg in Russia. "That was a very successful meeting, and they have pledged concerted efforts to promote the advancement of bilateral ties. Vajpayee also said he looked forward to a 'very important and fruitful' China visit."

China-India economic relations have also registered rapid progress, said Kong, noting that trade volume stood at more than 4.9 billion US dollars last year, while trade volume for the first four months of this year had surged by 70 percent year-on-year. "Compared with the growth rate of 39.6 percent of China's total foreign trade volume, that figure is very impressive and encouraging as well," he remarked.

He said the two countries' cooperation in culture, science, technology and education has also witnessed rapid development.

"On the other hand, we're also glad to see that relations between India and Pakistan have gained momentum. As both countries are our good neighbors, we sincerely hope they will further improve their ties, resolve their problems through peaceful dialogue and work for peace and development in the region," Kong said.
