Israel will "continue fighting terror as long as there is no one on the other (Palestinian) side who will do so," Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said on Tuesday.

In his speech at a public function at northern Israel's Netanya, carried by local Channel One News, Sharon said "we will continue tobattle those who head the extremist organizations, those who finance, support and send out suicide bombers."

His remarks came just hours after a failed assassination attempton Abdul Aziz al-Rantissi, spokesman of the Palestinian Islamic resistance movement Hamas in Gaza.

On Tuesday morning, Israeli Apache helicopters launched a missile attack at Rantissi's car, killing two bystanders and one ofhis bodyguards and injuring 34 others, including Rantissi himself.

US President George W. Bush said he was "deeply troubled" by Israeli helicopter strikes on Rantissi, and Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas angrily denounced it as a "terrorist act" and a "terrible deterioration" of the recent peace efforts.

Foreign ministers from major Arab states also accused Israel of trying to sabotage the US-backed roadmap peace plan.

"Israel continues to bomb the Palestinian territories in an attempt to sabotage the peace efforts and bring the region back into the cycle of violence," said Arab League Secretary General AmrMoussa.
