India test-fired a medium-range surface-to-air missile on Tuesday from an integrated test range off its east coast, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI).
The missile, cadenamed Akash, was fired at about 11:40 a.m. local time (07:10 GMT) from a mobile launcher at Chandipur, a town along the east coast of Orissa.
The indigenously built sophisticated multi-target missile, which has a range of 25 kilometers, is one of the five missile systems currently under various stages of development by the Defense Research Development Organization.
Akash, with a weight of 650 kilograms, has the capacity to carry a payload of 50 kilograms and uses the integrated two-stage ramjet propulsion technology, PTI said, quoting defense sources.
India has test-fired the missile three times within the last fortnight. The other two tests were conducted on May 29 and June 2 respectively.
