As Beijing steps up preparations for the 2008 Olympic Games, work began on laying a section of road within the planned Olympic Park area on Sunday. Located in the northern part of the park, the Xindian Road is the first of the Olympic Park infrastructure projects to get underway.
Intercrossing with the Badaling and Beijing-Chengde expressways, the five-kilometer-long Xindian road will be the main east-west bound road in the Olympic Park. The designated traffic speed for the road is 60 kilometers an hour.
Workers began their road-building task by firstly digging wells to lower the groundwater level, since the high underground water level in the area poses a flooding threat.
According to the project manager, the workers plan to dig 88 wells in a week's time, so as to better learn about the underground water situation. The road is expected to be finished by the end of November, laying the ground work for the construction of the State Sports Stadium and the National Swimming Center.
