Mauritania Foils Coup, Al-Jazeera Reports
A military coup was foiled early Sunday morning in Nouakchott, capital of Mauritania, Al-Jazeera reported.

A military coup was foiled early Sunday morning in Nouakchott, capital of Mauritania, Al-Jazeera reported.
The TV station quoted witnesses as saying that exchanges of fire had been heard near the presidential palace during the coup. Military helicopers were seen flying over the palace.
The report also said President Maawiya Ould Sid Ahmed Taya and his family members were safe.
The situation has returned to normal, according to the report, which gave no more details.
