Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and South Korean President Roh Moo Hyun said Saturday the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) must be solved in peaceful way.

After their talks on early Saturday, the two leaders said in a joint statement that they will not allow any form of nuclear program of the DPRK, but stressed that the nuclear issue must be solved peacefully.

The statement said the DPRK must abandon the nuclear weapons program in a "verifiable and irreversible manner."

Roh and Koizumi reconfirmed the principles reached in their separate meetings with US President George W. Bush.

In those meetings, the leaders agreed on "further steps" and "tougher measures" against any escalation of the issue.
