Local authorities in northwest China's Gansu Province on Friday announced the discharge of the province's last remaining SARS patient.

Seven of the province's total of eight SARS patients have been discharged from the hospital, while the eighth succumbed to the disease, said Hou Shenghua, director of the provincial health bureau.

Gansu has effectively controlled the spread of the contagious disease, said Hou, adding that Gansu has not reported a new SARS case for 27 consecutive days.

The local SARS epidemic peak took place from April 9 to May 10.

Prompt measures helped protect medical staff, schools and ruralareas from infection by the highly contagious disease.

There are still more than 300 people quarantined in Gansu.
