Due to the higher water level of the Yangtze at the Bayang Gorge, the local navigation administration Friday lifted the ban on night navigation imposed during the flood season on the waterway, one of the narrowest sections of the Yangtze.

The 10-km Bayang Gorge is known as the "throat" of the Yangtze. Some 8.7 km of the waterway at the gorge was imposed with the ban, with the widest section measuring 102 meters.

During the flood season each year, strong currents and other hazardous conditions on the narrow waterway pose a serious threat to the safety of ships navigating at night.

The Three Gorges Reservoir began storing water on June 1 this year, bringing the water level at the Bayang Gorge to 122 meters by Friday morning. Thus, the waterway at the gorge has become 500meters wide at its upper reaches and 800 meters at its lower reaches.

By 10:00 p.m. Friday, the water level of the Three Gorges Reservoir had reached 122.71 meters. The water level is expected to rise by four to five meters daily and to reach 135 meters by June 15.
