Flooding, Landslide Kill 17 in Xinjiang

A night-long torrential rainstorm caused floods and landslides in the Ili River valley northwest of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, leaving 17 dead and six missing as of 12:30 Friday.

A night-long torrential rainstorm caused floods and landslides in the Ili River valley northwest of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, leaving 17 dead and six missing as of 12:30 Friday.

The highway between Gongliu County and Tekes County was washed away in four places, trapping over 100 cars. Houses in the two counties, and in Nilka County, were also damaged.

Rescue teams were clearing debris and traffic was again flowingon main roads at press time.
