China and Mongolia on Thursday called for a greater UN role in maintaining world peace, settling international disputes and promoting cooperation in economy and other areas.

The principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter and accepted norms governing international relations should be respected, said a joint declaration issued at the end of Chinese President Hu Jintao's state visit to Mongolia.
The United Nations plays a pivotal role in maintaining world peace and security, resolving international disputes and promotingcooperation in economic, social, environmental and other fields, the declaration said.
The role of the United Nations should be strengthened in the future, it said.
Both sides express their support for each other's efforts to promote political dialogue and mutual trust in the region, and welcome each other's initiatives aimed at enhancing dialogue and cooperation in northeast Asia, the document said.
Both sides support the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsulaand maintain that the nuclear issue of the peninsula should be resolved through dialogue and by peaceful means in the interest ofpeace and stability there, it said.
The Beijing talks attended by China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the United States marked a good start for the peaceful resolution of the nuclear issue of the peninsula, andthe process should continue, it said.
China supports Mongolia's desire to become a member of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum and join the Asia-Europe Meeting, the declaration said.
