The overall water quality at the Three Gorges reservoir remains stable, a senior environment official said here Thursday, citing surveys conducted in the past two weeks.
Xie Zhenhua, director of the State Environmental Protection Administration, said at a press conference that China had taken many measures to prevent water contamination at the Three Gorges reservoir.
Surveys of the water quality from late May till June 4 show that there is not much change in the water quality at the Three Gorges reservoir, Xie said.
By the end of next year, he said, all the sewage treatment plants in counties along the Yangtze Three Gorges reservoir will go into operation.
To ensure the water quality at the Three Gorges reservoir, the Chinese government will invest 20 billion yuan (2.4 billion US dollars) to set up garbage and sewage treatment plants along the Yangtze River section upstream.
Some 5 billion (610 million US dollars) of the investment has been put in place so far, Xie added.
