Guangzhou city, one of the major gates to the outside world in south China, plans to build itself into a major international logistics center in five to 10 years.
Wu Ziyou, deputy head of the Guangzhou City Development and Reform Commission, said that efforts would be focused on building three international logistics parks in three areas of Guangzhou.
Preparations for construction of the parks, which will be designed to complement each other, have begun.
In addition, five regional comprehensive zones of logistics will also be built, according to Wu.
"Development of modern logistics in Guangzhou has just started,so the cost is high and accounts for 17 percent to 20 percent of the city's gross domestic product (GDP)," said Wu.
Meanwhile, Wu pledged a solid foundation for an international center of logistics would be in place in this southern Chinese city by 2005. And by the year 2010, he added, the cost for logistics will be cut down from the present level to around 13 percent.
