The University of Hong Kong (HKU) announced Tuesday it will establish a scholarship to commemorate Lau Wing Kai, the first health care worker killed in the fight against SARS in Hong Kong.
Lau was fatally infected by SARS as he tried to resuscitate a SARS patient and died on April 26.
The scholarship will be awarded annually to undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students who have achieved academic and clinical excellence.
"Although Lau is not a gradate of HKU, we hold great appreciation to his dedication and we hope his spirit can be sustained in the nursing community and to the new generation of healthcare professionals," Sophia Siu-Chee Chan, head of the Department of Nursing Studies of HKU said.
