The gigantic Three Gorges project will not only generate hydroelectric power for China's more than 20 provinces but will turn Yichang, a city within the reach of the project construction site into a booming tourism destination.

Gao Chao, deputy director of the Yichang municipal tourism administrative bureau, said the filling of the Three Gorges Reservoir will bring little negative influence to the original picturesque landscape of the magnificent three gorges but will instead add more fantastic natural scenic sites for tourists.

The construction of the Three Gorges Project has received wide attention from visitors both from home and overseas. In 2002 alone, about 420,000 overseas tourist arrivals were reported in Yichang, a 150 percent increase from 2000.
