China and Japan should bear in mind history and make joint efforts to develop healthy bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term perspective.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue made the remarks at a regular press conference Tuesday in response to a question.

She said Chinese President Hu Jintao told Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi during their meeting in St. Petersburg that the Japanese government should properly deal with historical problems.

The two sides should adhere to the joint statements and other relevant documents signed by the two countries and continue to develop bilateral relations in the new century, Zhang quoted Hu assaying.

This was Hu's first meeting with the Japanese prime minister since his election, and the two leaders reached important consensus on further development of friendly bilateral ties, Zhang said.

China opposes pressure or sanctions in DPRK nuclear issue
China is opposed to exerting pressure or sanctions in resolving nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said here Tuesday.

At a regular press conference in response to a question about China's stance on the DPRK nuclear issue, Zhang said China stood for maintaining peace and stability of the Korean peninsula and for the denuclearization of the peninsula, which facilitated the peace and stability of the region and the world at large while heeding the security concerns of the DPRK.

Noting that the Beijing talks between China, the DPRK and the United States, held in April, were a good start for the DPRK and the United States to resolve the issue and should be continued, she said all parties concerned also regarded such talks as a very preferable framework and means and China hoped that the talks would continue.

China had always maintained that the DPRK nuclear issue should be resolved through dialogue, Zhang said. China is in opposition to exerting pressure or imposing sanctions in international relations because such actions would intensify the present situation and be detrimental to the resolution of the issue.

China appreciates Palestinian, Israeli concrete steps
China appreciates and supports the recent concrete steps taken by Palestine and Israel in an effort to promote peace in the Middle East.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue made the remarks at a regular press conference Tuesday in response to questions about China's expectations with regard to the US president's talks with Arab leaders in Egypt and his talks with Palestinian and Israeli officials in Jordan and to a request for China's comments on the recent positive developments in Israeli-Palestinian relations.

Zhang said China hopes that the talks will result in positive achievements, so as to encourage the early resumption of peace talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians, which will hopefully lead to a comprehensive and long-term peace in the Middle East at the earliest possible date.

The Middle East peace process is faced with a new window of opportunity, and China hopes that both the Palestinians and the Israelis will persist in their active cooperation with the international community's peace-making efforts and strive for an early resumption of peace talks.
