Acting Mayor of Beijing Confident about Maintaining anti-SARS Progress

Although Beijing is facing new challenges, we are confident about maintaining the achievements already made in the fight against the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic, said Beijing Acting Mayor Wang Qishan in Beijing Tuesday.

Although Beijing is facing new challenges, we are confident about maintaining the achievements already made in the fight against the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic, said Beijing Acting Mayor Wang Qishan here Tuesday.

Wang made the remarks during a meeting with Klaus Wowereit, the mayor of Berlin, Germany. Since May 7, the number of medical workers infected by SARS in Beijing's hospitals has dropped sharply, he said, stressing the positive roles played by the Beijing disease control center and by various social groups.

Klaus Wowereit spoke highly of the great changes taking place in Beijing, adding that he felt safe upon arriving in China and that Beijing should prepare for the resumption of normal activities while remaining alert.
