More than 100 products will be subject to compulsory certification to ensure their quality and safety starting from August 1, the China Daily reported Tuesday.
Exporters and importers will not be able to trade in products on the government's list that do not carry the "China Compulsory Certification" mark, according to the Certification and Accreditation Administration of China.
The administration announced in December 2001 its plans to introduce the mandatory scheme and originally set a date of May 1, 2003.
But because of the outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), the deadline has been put off till August.
To date, about 70 percent of products that must undergo checks have been certified, statistics show.
"But some enterprises are still waiting and seeing because they don't want to pay the cost of certification," said Qiu Yiliang, chief manager of the administration.
The 132 products include electric tools, household electrical appliances and audio and video equipment.
"The measure also fulfills China's commitments to the World Trade Organization. We will treat foreign companies and their products the same way we treat domestic ones," Qiu said.
