Six residents of central China's Henan Province have been sentenced to jail terms ranging from one to three years for attempting to block the establishment of a quarantine area for suspect and probable SARS patients.
Yang Xilai, Zhang Dongfeng, Wang Yongyu, Duan Suiqiang, Wang Dengyun and Gao Ming were convicted and imprisoned on charges of disrupting social order, according to a decree by the People's Court of Linzhou City.
On April 27, Yang, a taxi driver in Linzhou, learned that the city was planning to establish a second quarantine facility in a local clinic nearby his residence with the aim of preventing the spread of SARS.
In the evening, Yang and Zhang mobilized about 300 neighbors to try to impede the establishment of the facility by blocking the road with garbage, damaging the walls and office buildings of the clinic and disrupting the telecommunications facilities of the clinic, the court said.
The court also ordered the six to pay 5,266 yuan (about 630 US dollars) in compensation to cover the losses incurred by the clinic.
