Chinese President Hu Jintao said on Thursday that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) needs to step up efforts to fight terrorism.
Delivering a speech at the Third SCO Summit Meeting in Moscow, Hu said security cooperation has been an priority of the SCO.
"We shall never lower vigilance against the 'three forces' (of international terrorism, ethnic separatism and religious extremism), which pose serious threats to the member countries, still less appease them," Hu said.
Long-term tireless efforts are needed to eliminate these evil forces so as to safeguard regional security and stability, the Chinese president said.
To cut the financial sources of the "three forces" and fight them in a more effective way, the fight against drug trafficking should be put on the agenda of security cooperation.
Hu said institutional building is the top priority of the SCO for now. Progress has been made in the preparatory work for the establishment of a SCO secretariat and a regional anti-terrorism center, Hu said.
"We should work even harder to make sure that the secretariat could be operational within this year. The anti-terror center should be created as soon as possible."
He pledged that China, as host country to the secretariat, will provide offices free of charge for the secretariat. More help willalso be provided, he said.
President Hu arrived here on Monday for a state visit to Russia and the SCO summit. He will also travel to St. Petersburg for celebrations marking the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Russian city.
