Emergency Measures to Combat Pollution along Yellow River

China will strictly govern the discharge of waste water into the Yellow River to ensure water supplies to people living along the nation's second longest river,China Daily reported Wednesday.

China will strictly govern the discharge of waste water into the Yellow River to ensure water supplies to people living along the nation's second longest river,China Daily reported Wednesday.

The State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) Tuesday introduced emergency measures as the river, dubbed as the "Mother River" of the Chinese, is hit by the worst water shortage in over half a century and threatened by massive pollution, the newspaper said.

Periods classified as "emergencies" will come into effect when the water flow at a certain section is less than 250 cubic meters per second.

Cities along the river between Longmen in Shaanxi Province and Huayuankou in Henan Province will be under strict supervision. When the water flow is less than 470 cubic meters per second at the Huayuankou section, local environmental authorities will issuewarnings and adopt precautionary measures.

The newspaper said that special attention will be paid to potentially polluting industries in these cities to ensure no improperly treated waste is discharged into the river and violators will be closed down or demanded to reduce their production scale.

Liu Guozheng, an official with SEPA, was quoted as saying that the waste control measures are necessary because the serious watershortage in the river is likely to endanger the quality of drinking water to people living in the middle and lower reaches ifpotential pollution is not effectively curbed.

Liu said that it is essential to improve supervision especiallyin those "key pollution control areas" to control pollution to theriver.
