Three Gorges Project Brings Investment to Small Yangtze City

The construction of the massive Three Gorges water conservancy project has brought increasing fame and fortune to the formerly little-known Yichang, a small city along the Yangtze River in the western part of Hubei Province, central China.

The construction of the massive Three Gorges water conservancy project has brought increasing fame and fortune to the formerly little-known Yichang, a small city along the Yangtze River in the western part of Hubei Province, central China.

According to statistics from the city's foreign trade and economic cooperation bureau, the city had approved 840 foreign-invested enterprises by the end of 2002, involving a contractual foreign investment of more than one billion US dollars.

Major investment went to the processing, electronic and high-tech industries.

Yichang is rich in waterpower resources, boasting many large-scale water conservancy projects including the Gezhouba and Three Gorges projects, in addition to more than 450 medium-sized and small power stations.

The Three Gorges project, due to go into full operation in 2009with a total installed generating capacity of 18.2 million kw, will generate 84.7 billion kwh of electricity annually.

The city also possesses rich tourism resources that are attractive to investors and have drawn the Hong Kong-listed Shun Tak Holdings to invest in the city's tourism development.

Yichang boasts 113 kilometers of the 193 km-long famous Three Gorges, which are among the longest in the world. Along the Three Gorges on the upper reaches of the Yangtze, the longest river of China, are many scenic spots and site of historical interest.
