More than 40 medical experts from Beijing, Taipei, Guangzhou and Hong Kong on Tuesday held a symposium on preventing and treating severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) via videophone.
During the three hour symposium, experts from the four cities briefed the participants on the current status of SARS prevention, treatment and epidemiological survey methods in their respective areas and exchanged views on SARS diagnostic standards, SARS symptoms, SARS treatment methods and the SARS infection period.
The participants reached consensus that regular cross-Straits symposiums of this type are vital in order to ensure the timely exchange of information and enhance anti-SARS capability through cross-Straits collaboration.
Cao Ronggui, director of the Chinese Hospital Management Society, said, given that the two sides share the same national origin, the prevention and treatment of SARS is a task that should be carried out jointly undertaken by doctors from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan Province. He said that he expects further exchanges and cooperation on SARS treatment between the two sides in the future, noting that medical experts on the Chinese mainlandare willing to organize medical teams to travel to Taiwan for SARS treatment exchange and cooperation if requested by the Taiwanese medical establishment.
Taiwanese medical expert Gao Mingjian expressed the hope that such exchanges will be more active and frequent in the future. Inthis way, experts from the four cities could share valuable experience, improve their SARS diagnostic and treatment capability and fully prevent the spread of the SARS epidemic in their respective cities.
