Chinese Mainland Reports 8 New SARS Cases (May 26)

There were eight new severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) cases and two new deaths from the disease between 10:00 a.m. May 25 and 10:00 a.m. May 26 on the Chinese mainland. The cumulative SARS cases rose to 5,316 while the death toll reached 317 respectively.

There were eight new severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) cases and two new deaths from the disease between 10:00 a.m. May 25 and 10:00 a.m. May 26 on the Chinese mainland, the Ministry of Health reported Monday.

The cumulative SARS cases rose to 5,316 while the number of SARS patients discharged from hospitals and the death toll reached 2,829 and 317 respectively, the ministry said in a daily report.

Beijing reported five new SARS cases and one new deaths from the disease from 10:00 a.m. May 25 to 10:00 a.m. May 26, the Ministry of Health said Monday.

On May 26, 6 provinces reported new SARS cases, of which, 2 provinces reported both new diagnosed cases and new suspected cases, 1 province reported new diagnosed cases, 3 provinces reported new suspected cases, and the remaining 25 provinces reported no new case.

By 10:00 am May 26, 26 provinces had reported SARS cases. So far, Hainan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Qinghai provinces, and Tibet Autonomous Region have not found any case. Of the provinces having reported suspected or diagnosed SARS cases, Heilongjiang and Xinjiang still reported no diagnosed case; Anhui, Shanghai, Gansu, Jiangsu, Hubei, Liaoning and Hunan reported less than 10 diagnosed cases respectively; Ningxia, Zhejiang, Fujian, Chongqing, Jiangxi and Shandong reported less than 5 diagnosed cases respectively. Hunan, Fujian and Shandong had reported no new case for more than 1 month; Ningxia and Jiangxi had reported no new case for 20 days; Henan, Chongqing, Zhejiang, Shaanxi, Anhui, Jiangsu and Gansu had reported no new case for 10 days respectively; Tianjin, Jilin and Guangdong had reported no new case for 9 days; Guangxi had reported no new case for 8 days, and Hubei had reported no new case for 7 days.

Of these figures: Beijing reported 5 new cases (of which 4 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients), 43 patients recovered and 1 death; Shanxi reported 1 new case (which used to be suspected but now confirmed as a SARS patient), and 5 patients recovered; Inner Mongolia reported 2 new cases (both of which used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients), 17 patients recovered and 1 death; Tianjin reported no new case, and 4 recovered; Hebei reported no new case, and 13 recovered; Jilin reported no new case, and 3 recovered; Zhejiang and Guangdong reported no new case, with each province reporting 1 patient recovered;

From 10:00 am May 25 to 10:00 am May 26, China also reported 29 new suspected cases, including 20 from Beijing, 2 from Shanxi, 1 each from Hebei and Henan, and 5 from Guangdong.

China also reported 85 misdiagnosed suspected cases, of which 52 were from Beijing, 8 from Inner Mongolia, 7 each from Hebei and Guangdong, 4 from Shanxi, 3 from Hubei and 1 each from Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shaanxi. By 10:00 am May 26, China had a total of 1,510 suspected cases.
